The sunflower seed is the product of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The expression "sunflower seed" is really a misnomer when connected to the seed in its pericarp (body). Organically, it is a cypsela. Whenever dehulled, the eatable leftover portion is known as the sunflower bit or heart.
